Update On My Writing/Speaking Journey

I have been a bit discouraged lately with the progress I have made in my writing and speaking journey.  I am concerned that my writing is taking too much time and money from our family life. I write every week, but I don’t have nearly enough time to devote to writing as I would like. My book is in nearly the same state as it has been in for almost two years. I’ve spent an enormous amount time working on developing my social media platform that I haven’t had time to work on my larger goals. I invest my time and money in making my dream a reality with what seems like endless, monotonous steps. Sometimes I wonder if it will ever pay off in the end. The business aspect of being a writer is far less enjoyable to me than the creative aspect of writing.

For those of you who have been following my journey, here is where I am.

Last summer, instead of devoting my time to writing like I had done in previous years, I took my summer break to do some much needed cleaning and organizing. Those tasks took far longer than anticipated, and I was unable to accomplish anything beyond the bear minimum writing to keep my blog active.

My greatest frustration has been my need to get my website up and running. It’s just sitting there half finished. I am still hopeful that it will get done soon. Much of my other goals for self promotion, hinge on having a website. If you want to take a peek at the unfinished work it’s here.

This morning, I signed up for the Rutger’s- New Brunswick Writer’s Conference. This will be the 3rd conference I have attended, but the first secular conference. I’ll be there June 1st and 2nd.

I am continuing to seek opportunities to speak at events and to groups. My hope is to do more marketing of that this summer. I have a retreat scheduled for the fall which I am extremely excited about.

I am continuing to develop my writing craft through conferences, books and other means. I bought a grammar book to read over spring break. Exciting, I know.

I’m planning on learning more about fiction writing. Authors are told to write what they read, and I love fiction. I read a lot of non-fiction, but when I want to relax, I’m grabbing a sweet, fiction story. I am contemplating re-writing my book as fiction. Real life is funny enough, but fiction makes those tales even more enjoyable (or palatable, perhaps).

In order to move into the fiction genre, I hope to start writing some fiction entries in my blog. I’m not sure how that will go, but you will all get to be my guinea pigs.

This summer, I hope to devote a huge chunk of time to rewriting my book as a novel and preparing it to send to an agent and an editor.

That’s everything in a nutshell.
